Grand Seiko Refreshes Evolution 9 Design With Nine New References, Including Five Spring Drive UFA

Hi-Beat and Ultra Fine Accuracy calibers anchor fan favorite models featuring micro-adjust bracelets.

Grand Seiko has just announced a significant update to the Evolution 9 collection. Evolution 9 was launched in 2020 in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Grand Seiko, and the idea was to take the the 1967 “Grammar of Design” Grand Seiko design principles and update them for the modern era.

From 1967 To 2026: Grammar Of Design To Evolution 9

The original Grammar of Design principles included the use of flat surfaces and avoidance of rounded curves, maximum width of flat components for improved visibility, and flat, distortion free polishing. These principles have largely been adhered to for most of the production of Grand Seiko watches since 1960, when the first Grand Seiko watches were produced, albeit with some variations depending on current design trends. In 2020, however, these principles, while not replaced outright, were redefined for the future of Grand Seio, and became the basis of a specific collection: The Evolution 9 Collection.

The Evolution 9 principles are:

  • “Aesthetics of light and shadow” – the use of wider, contrasting brushed and finished surfaces
  • “Ultimate legibility” – this refers to the use of broader, faceted, highly polished hands and markers
  • “Ergonomic comfort” – this means case designs with a flat caseback, downward curving lugs, and a lower center of gravity, as well as a bracelet at least half the width of the case or more. These features help the watch hug the wrist comfortably and help prevent sliding around.

The new Evolution 9 models retain all these features, and now include bracelets with a more pronounced taper, and the three step, 2mm increment micro adjust first introduced in 2025 in the Spring Drive UFA “Ice Forest” SLGB003. All models are 40mm, except for SLGB015, which is a UFA Spring Drive model with a Lake Suwa Blue dial and a 37mm case (I would not be surprised if this one turned out to be the hardest to get; the dial plus the case size ought to be catnip for today’s Grand Seiko enthusiasts). The cases are either in Ever-Brilliant Steel or High Intensity Titanium.

Ever-Brilliant Steel And High-Intensity Titanium

Ever-Brilliant Steel is a highly corrosion resistant stainless steel alloy – the exact formula is not disclosed by Grand Seiko, but it’s likely that it’s a high performance formulation of 904L stainless steel. Grand Seiko has said that the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number – a number which quantifies how well a stainless steel alloy resists pitting corrosion, which can occur as a result of exposure to salt water or perspiration, or even chlorinated pool water – of the alloy is 40, which is at the high end of PREN numbers for 904L and well above the typical range for 316L, which is 24 to 26.

High-Intensity Titanium is also a proprietary Grand Seiko alloy. It has all the lightness and strength of titanium, but is also harder and more scratch resistant than both conventional titanium and 316L stainless steel, and can be mirror polished as well.

There are nine new models in all, with five Spring Drive models and four Hi-Beat.

The Evolution 9 Spring Drive models all have dials which draw on the natural sources of inspiration which are behind many of Grand Seiko’s most famous dials.

Variations include Lake Suwa blue in two sizes (37mm and 40mm) as well as Lake Suwa Black (seen above, and inspired by moonlight on the lake), Lake Suwa Birch, and Atera Valley Green (the river running through the Atera Valley is a brilliant turquoise green and is a popular destination for hikers).

The slightly more pronounced taper is definitely visible, and the characteristic Evolution 9 handset and indexes should make reading the time in low light easy, despite the absence of lume (Grand Seiko’s diamond polished indexes and hands are famous for being easily legible even in dim light or at night).

All the new Evolution 9 2026 Spring Drive models use the UFA caliber 9RB2. This represents a major expansion of the use of Grand Seiko’s most precise Spring Drive movement, which heretofor had existed only in the 2025 Ice Forest, and 2026 UFA “Ushio” diver’s watches. Features contributing to its precision include a sealed quartz timing package with a crystal pre-aged for 3 months to ensure long term rate stability, and, for the first time in a Spring Drive movement, a watchmaker-usable rate trimmer, to allow for fine adjustments to precision if necessary.

All of the Evolution 9 2026 Hi-Beat models use the 9SA5 caliber, which was introduced in 2020, with an impressive 80 hour power reserve (such a long power reserve is unusual in a high frequency watch).

In addition to the long power reserve, the caliber 9SA5 is notable for its use of Seiko’s Dual Impulse Escapement. An improvement on the lever escapement, the Dual Impulse escapement shares some features with the co-axial escapement, and its main advantage is greater efficiency, which contributes significantly to the longer power reserve.

Despite its advanced design, the caliber 9SA5 also takes advantage of traditional strategies for improving precision, including a freesprung adjustable mass balance, and an overcoil balance spring.

Grand Seiko fans may be especially interested in the Genbi Valley model, SLGH035. The Genbi Valley is located in Iwate Prefecture, the location of the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. Genbi Valley is a spectacular local landmark with dramatic rock formations and brilliant blue water

I think it’s safe to say that this is the update to the Evolution 9 collection that enthusiasts have been waiting for. The wider use of the micro adjust bracelet, as well as the use of Grand Seiko’s proprietary escapement in the Hi-Beat caliber 9SA5, and the use of the UFA Spring Drive caliber 9RB2 in five new very beautiful watches at once, makes the new Evolution 9 collection of watches something that I think a lot of folks are going to want to see in person. As usual, there are too many to pick favorites but with a gun to my head, I’d probably do the SLBG015 37mm Lake Suwa “Moonlight On The Lake” model, and I’d also probably take forever to make up my mind, given the other very tempting options available.
