Spanning 1976 through 1998, the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse ref. 3848 pairs compact dress-watch proportions with a manual-winding movement. Auction literature generally places its public introduction in 1977, although a documented ref. 3848/900 was manufactured in 1976 and sold the following year. It succeeded ref. 3648, replacing calibre 23-300 with calibre 215 while adopting Favre-Perret case construction and a revised bezel cut. Its 27 x 32 mm proportions preserve the Ellipse shape introduced in 1968, whose geometry draws on the golden ratio and sits between a circle and a rectangle. Ref. 3848 encompasses materially different watches rather than one fixed configuration. Strap models appeared in yellow or white gold, while executions such as 3848/1J, 3848/8J, 3848/17, and 3848/19 used integrated bracelets with different constructions. The signature blue dial was fashioned from gold and turned blue through a special Patek Philippe process; documented alternatives include Autumn Gold, white Breguet-numeral, Lapis Lazuli, and black Onyx dials.
