Watches of Westeros
With the final Game of Thrones upon us this weekend, we’ve decided to take a look at some of our favorite characters and what watch best represents them. While we want to avoid any SPOILERS for those who have not had the chance to watch Season 8, there may be spoilers. You have been warned!
Watches For Game of Thrones Characters
Every watch has it’s own look. We’re pulling watches from our inventory that we feel speaks to each of these characters in one way or another. What would your favorite character be or wear?
Ghost
Starting with one of the most loved characters, Ghost has the ability to disappear but comes back with a vengeance. We thought it was only proper for him to have the Rolex Submariner 16800 with “Ghost Bezel.”
What is a ghost bezel? It’s a faded bezel due to a defect in the pre-Cerachrom aluminum bezel. It is rare and desirable with many different factors leading to the Ghosting. It gives this Submariner a unique look, just like Ghost with his red eyes.
Jon Snow
Of course, Jon and Ghost need to be side-by-side in our round up. For some one who “knows nothing,” we figured he should at least know the time. The Tudor Submariner 7021/0 is a fitting watch nicknamed the “Snowflake.” While it shares a common name with the Rolex Submariner, this gets it’s name from the distinctive Snowflake hands.
Similar to Jon Snow, Tudor has come back from the dead. The brand was officially founded in 1946 but in the mid-2000s, the brand wasn’t seen very often. Over the last few years, the brand has been revitalized and “brought back to life.” The Tudor Submariner Snowflake has even been brought back within the Heritage Black Bay.
Arya Stark
Arya has seen many changes over the 8 seasons, but one thing has stood true since her time spend with the Faceless Men. She was a servant of the Many Faced God, and (spoiler?) she killed Walder Frey using her training. It’s only fitting that the watch we chose for Arya is the Ressence Type 5.1B.
The watch itself goes Beyond Hands; Arya goes beyond faces with her Braavosi training. The dark oil filled case fits in with her stealthy movements this season and when she killed the Waif in the darkness. Although, there are some theories the Waif conquered Arya and assumed her identity.
Sansa Stark
Continuing on with the Stark family, we’ve chosen a strong and symbolic watch for Sansa. The Jacquet Droze Petite Heure fits in with the strength and costuming seen on Sansa after her time with Ramsey Bolton (spoiler – also dead).
The strong black dial with silver circle holding the time is reminiscent of the necklace Sansa wears. There are many thoughts behind the meaning of the necklace, but underlying many agree that it represents unity, commitment and coming full circle back to Winterfell. The Jacquet Droz is quite striking yet it is balanced by the satin strap and matches her character.
Tyrion Lannister
One of the most important and interesting characters, and who was previously married to Sansa (any one else hoping they work things out?) Tyrion needed a very special watch. One of his favorite saying was that he “drinks and knows things.” Well, the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar 5074R-001, tells time and knows things.
The watch features an 18k rose gold case, although if we had yellow gold we would have chosen that to more aptly represent the Lannister. It’s also an extremely complicated watch, just like Tyrion, and as mentioned, it knows things. A few of the things this watch knows how to do is chime the time for you without looking and automatically adjust every month for the proper date. The watch would also allow for the Lannister to “always pay his debt” at least for a while.
Daenerys Targaryen
Where do we even begin. Daenerys is the:
- Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men
- Protector of the Realm
- Queen of Meereen
- Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea
- Mother of Dragons
- The Unburnt
- Breaker of Chains
- Lady of Dragonstone
With so many titles, we needed to find the most fitting watch for her and landed upon the F.P. Journe Octa Calendrier. Not only has Journe been called a living watch legend, Daenerys (Dany) herself could be considered one as well. Although, spoiler, she is probably now one of the most hated rather than the most revered.
What we love about this Octa Calendrier, is that it’s Mother of Pearl and Dany is the Mother of Dragons. The dial reflects different colors when under different light and angles. It can appear almost purple (like Dany’s eyes) but than can look almost black from some angles.
Brandon (Bran) Stark
One of the most mysterious characters is Bran Stark. He became the Three-Eyed Raven and is able to see the past, present and future. He also has the ability to warg into animals and people (R.I.P. Hodor) and when he does this, his eyes roll backwards and we just see white with blank face staring out.
The Arnold and Son Dual Time called out to us for Bran, maybe it was because the two large dual time apertures look like they could be eyes staring out, with the crowns as ears. We also needed a complicated watch to match the complexity of Bran. There are quite a few theories about him becoming the Night King, being evil, and what kind of role he’ll have in the conclusion of the show.
The Night King
(Spoiler!)
A character who unfortunately met his demise this season, and who had a very strong connection with Bran, the Night King needed the perfect watch.
The piercing ice blue eyes of the White Walkers perfectly matches the ice blue dial of the Rolex Day-Date II 218206. Not only do the colors line up, the platinum case can symbolize snow, the dial of the Rolex features the iconic crown. It’s only fitting the Night King would wear a crown.
Bonus: Drogon; the Dragon
(Spoiler!)
The Mother of Dragons only has one dragon left, first losing Viserion to the Night King and most recently Rhaegal was taken down by Euron Greyjoy before the official battle of Kings Landing. We couldn’t leave out Drogon from our list, especially after seeing the Romain Jerome RJ.V.AU.003.01 Eyjafallajokull-DNA Classic come into inventory.
This iconic watch from Romain Jerome was designed relating to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano. The dial looks like molten lava peering through ash and rock. Looking back at Episode 5, this is quite similar to Drogon completely destroying Kings Landing and leaving nothing but ash. Not to mention, the lava on the dial looks similar to dragon fire making its way through the city.
Bonus: Euron Greyjoy
After seeing the Ulysse Nardin Classico Kruzenshtern, we had to include Euron on our list. This watch is fitting for the captain of the Silence and leader of the Iron Fleet. He was also named the commander of the Lannister fleet after defeating the allies of Daenerys in Blackwater Bay.
The enamel dial of the Ulysse Nardin primarily features a 4 mast ship, with one sailing in the distance. The maritime scene pays homage to the Kruzenshtern, originally built in Germany in 1926, and perfect for the Iron Born Greyjoy.
We’ll leave you to theorizing about what may or may not happen in the final episode of Game of Thrones. We want to hear what YOU pick for your favorite characters. Did we leave out any of your favorite living (or dead) characters? Let us know!
