Once again, Panerai goes to its well of history and draws a motherlode of vintage style.

The Panerai PAM 425 pays tribute to the Panerai combat dive watches of the late 1930s and early 40s while referencing the WWII combat record of these watches in the hands of Italy’s Decima Flottiglia MAS commandos.

After modifying and issuing its first run of Rolex-built combat divers from 1936-1938, Panerai began to exert more direct control on the design process for the second iteration of the famous Panerai 3646.

The key distinction, featured here in the PAM 425, is the “baton” dial that exchanged the civilian-issue “California” dial of the first 3646 for a larger, less complicated, more visible “sandwich” design for combat use. This revision greatly enhanced legibility under demanding mission conditions.

Above the baton index at 6 o’clock a small raised outline of the famous Siluro a Lenta Corsa: the Decima MAS’ manned torpedo attack craft. While the Italian Navy’s performance in WWII was compromised by its half-hearted dedication to the Axis cause, individual courage was exemplary.

In December 1941, Decima combat swimmers using the S.L.C. took out three Royal Navy warships – including two battleships. All Italian Navy personnel were equipped with Panerai watches closely resembling the PAM 425.

Today’s Radiomir S.L.C. 3 Days combines the effortless cool factor of vintage Panerai divers with the build quality, finish, and usability of a modern luxury watch. A scratch-proof sapphire crystal, three-day power reserve, robust 100 meter water rating, and beautifully detailed construction make this watch a premium product, not a museum piece.

Thoughtful luxury details include a display back case that reveals the Panerai-exclusive Cal. P.3000 Swiss movement in operation, elegant rose gold hands, and a polished case that does justice to Panerai’s newfound status as a watchmaker to elite tastes.

Convenience features include a “travel time” hour hand that can be adjusted forward or backward while jumping time zones. Even better, a simple flathead screw retention system permits easy DIY swapping of straps to suit the occasion or mood of the owner; strap upgrades are a Paneristi rite of passage!
