Bigger Is Always Better
Gone are the days when men only are the only ones who wear men’s watches. A growing trend has been developing and we’re seeing that a lot of women are not only wearing men’s watches, but also buying more watches in general. Nowadays, a girl does not want her only expensive jewelry to be that special ring on her finger, but also wants a really nice Rolex or Audemars Piguet.
One current trend is women wearing mechanical men’s watches. You can see this trend in celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston below wearing a Rolex Daytona and Charlize Theron wearing a men’s Rolex Deep Sea. The fact is that manufacturers are making watches bigger and bigger but are still sometimes limiting women’s sizes to a particular size. As a result, we see many female celebrities slipping on oversized men’s watches.
Heidi Klum below can be seen flashing one of my favorite brands. She is rocking the men’s Panerai Luminor Marina, measuring 44 mm. This watch is definitely not the standard size of a woman’s watch which usually measures 18-30 mm.
Women’s watches are the next big thing for the industry. The industry, once a masculine world, has now turned towards creating beautifully built watches with quality in house movements, multiple functions and complications specifically for women. Watch companies used to believe that women wanted quartz watches but designers are now beginning to put the same level of intricate craftsmanship found in men’s pieces into the mechanisms of women’s watches.
This new trend was evident in the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) which took place in January this year. The fact is, more women are investing in wrist watches than ever before. Therefore, most of the women’s watches on display at the SIHH depicted feminine characteristics, but there were a few timepieces that still carried a masculine theme to their design. The brands from the SIHH show tried to depict watches for the modern and active woman:
Roger Dubuis Excaliber 36
Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858
Audemars Piguet Ladycat Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph
Could this just prove truth to the wise old saying that indeed, bigger is always better?
