The 1916 Company3 Min ReadSep 28 2015

Ulysse Nardin’s complications span the entire spectrum of high horology engineering. But it is the charming execution of models like the Chronosplit Berlin 1907 that ensures emotional appeal to match the intellectual impact. With its timeless proportions, modern size, and distinctive details, the Ulysse Nardin Chronosplit Berlin 1907 embodies the core values of Le Locle’s Ulysse Nardin.

Zoom In

Ulysse Nardin built its name in the field of chronometry, and the reborn modern iteration of the company pays regular homage to the exploits of its past products. The Chronosplit Berlin 1907 was released during the mid 1990s to commemorate the company’s receipt of an award medal in that year’s event. A fitting tribute in the form of an embossed 1907 Universal Exhibition event logo is blazon on the case back.

Each Chronosplit Berlin 1907 features a case that exudes character and quality. The dramatic contrast between gold bezel, pushers, crown, and steel case sets tone for a handsome composition. Stepped lugs impart strength the the flanks of the Chronosplit, and the golden elements add just enough color to intrigue onlookers without overpower the delicate details of the dial within.

And what a dial it is. This Ulysse Nardin incorporates a deft juxtaposition of symmetry and asymmetry in close proximity. Each sub-register of the dial is balanced by an opposing dial, but the large off-center hours and minutes register at three o’clock creates a vastly different aesthetic than a conventional chronograph.

Gorgeous contrasting metallic treatments articulate the dial from its concave brushed tachymeter rehaut to the satin silver inner dial. A Clous-de-Paris guilloche hour track imparts real dynamism that stands apart from the subdued center dial and brushed minute race.

Moreover, the three registers at 12, 9, and six o’clock are distinguished by their use of mother-of-pearl inlays. The constant seconds dial at nine is made distinct from the chronograph minutes and hours at twelve and six, respectively, but the use of silver mother of pearl on the seconds dial and lightly rose-colored MOP on the chronograph displays.

At center, the blued rattrapante seconds hands are driven by a 27-jewel automatic Ulysse Nardin caliber 58. The V7750-based movement is tough, time-tested, and among the most reliable bases for the construction of a high complication. With efficient uni-directional winding, a 44-hour power reserve, and the on-demand visual fireworks of a split seconds chronograph (rattrapante), the Ulysse Nardin caliber 58 is a perfect power plant to complete a striking package.
