About M.A.D. Editions Watches

M.A.D. Editions is the experimental offshoot of MB&F, designed by the celebrated independent watchmaker Maximilian Büsser to make high-concept horology more accessible. While MB&F creates multi-dimensional horological machines with six-figure price tags, M.A.D. (short for "Mechanical Art Devices") offers playful wristwatches with radical design language and serious mechanical charm — all at a more attainable level. Originally gifted to MB&F "Friends" and close collaborators, M.A.D. Editions watches have since become cult favorites in the collector community, with extremely limited public releases and long waitlists.

Mechanical Art for the Watch Enthusiast

The M.A.D. Editions line was launched in 2021 by Maximilian Büsser, founder of MB&F , as a way to thank supporters of his independent watchmaking journey. The watches were never meant for commercial sale — the initial M.A.D.1 was offered only to close collaborators and suppliers. But the concept took on a life of its own, prompting MB&F to release a small number to the public via lottery.

M.A.D. Editions watches are unapologetically radical. Instead of traditional hour and minute hands, the time is displayed through lateral spinning discs, visible through the side of the case. The top of the watch showcases a mesmerizing, triple-blade rotor that spins freely — a kinetic spectacle that has become the brand's signature.

Limited Releases and Distinctive Colors

Several colorways have been introduced since the debut of the original M.A.D.1. These include the red-accented M.A.D.1 Red, the electric blue-accented M.A.D.1 Blue, and the stealthy M.A.D.1 Green — each version carrying subtle changes in execution but remaining true to the line's mechanical DNA. Cases are large and sculptural, typically constructed from stainless steel or lightweight alloys, and powered by modified Miyota automatic movements inverted to display the rotor on the dial side.

The Relationship to MB&F

Although distinct in concept and positioning, M.A.D. Editions is inextricably linked to MB&F . The same spirit of creativity, horological theater, and nonconformity runs through both brands. M.A.D. Editions distills the essence of MB&F's artistry — kinetic design, visual provocation, and emotional watchmaking — into a format that is both collectible and wearable.

Why Collectors Seek Out M.A.D. Editions

With extremely limited availability, unique presentation, and a strong connection to one of independent watchmaking's most influential minds, M.A.D. Editions has rapidly earned cult status. They are conversation pieces that challenge conventional definitions of a wristwatch — perfect for collectors drawn to movement, narrative, and boundary-pushing design.

Who This Is For

M.A.D. Editions watches are ideal for collectors who appreciate kinetic design, independent horology, and storytelling through mechanical art. If you've admired MB&F but seek something more approachable, these watches offer a gateway into the world of boundary-defying watchmaking.
